Never have I loved a music website so much until I found…. April 25, 2007

Musicovery!! The epitome of music discovery and quality ear wax! I discovered this nifty application/flash thingy, heck, I don’t know what to call it. Basically, it features a “tree” like visual representation of songs compiled by genre, by tempo, by mood (yes, by mood!) etc. One look at it and it reminds me of a TV remote control, it features a very simple interface and makes music browsing a breeze. Mind you, it doesn’t have the facility to browse individual music in a fixed playlist, so you wont know what sort of surprises you’re gonna get!
The selected music may be categorized by ‘Hit’, ‘Non-hit’ and ‘Discovery’. Checking the ‘Hit’ box will result in a “tree” of hit songs by genre. Checking on ‘Non-Hit’ will, well, feature a tree of non-hit songs, but worth listening, clicking on the ‘Discovery’ option ultimately will blow your mind away with hidden gems and obscure sounds. (Try checking all three options
The concept is a sound palette of all sorts. The good thing about Musicovery is that users wont be restricted to listening to one genre only, which is a great way for self music discovery. The quality is in Lo-Fi, and users need to pay a reasonable amount for Hi-Fi quality streaming. I personally think that this is not a big issue, as it’s an online radio anyway, so as long as I get minimal streaming interruptions, I’m fine with it. I was using Winamp’s shoutcast online radio for quite sometime, and I have to say….The streaming sucks.
I have some issues on how they categorize tracks , (Michael Jackson-Scream, under ‘Funk’?) but ultimately, it aint so bad.
I feel that Musicovery has potential. So go ahead, mail the link to friends, digg it, blink it, whatever, if you love music and you have this constant hunger for more offerings, this is the place for you!
My crusty office desk… April 24, 2007
Posted by ashz in General, Rants.1 comment so far

OK, so I don’t really mind about working spaces, in fact, I think that I can work anywhere provided there is a proper desk and adequate stationary (I doodle alot!), but this few weeks has been such an unproductive week and I strongly feel that this crusty desk of mine is really getting to me. I’m tired of having to look at my usual clutter day in, day out. I tried tidying up my desk, but it made things worst for me as I cant work at an extremely organized desk, so here are a few things that Ive done to make my limited office real estate interesting :
1- Rearrange my usual clutter once a week
2- Remove all of my old post-it notes and add new ones, while trying to keep them in the minimum
3- Try to listen to as many different online radio channels as possible per week, just to keep my ears refreshed with new sounds
4- Added a few “creative” clutter elements, another Gundam robot (Just to make me look creative and sophisticated)
5- Cleared all unused scrap paper and old drafts
….And a few things that I’m planning to do:
1- To buy a proper stationary station (an old coffee mug)
2- Add more motivational books (For show, just to impress my colleagues)
3- Adding a movie or anime poster just to add colour to my otherwise pale white cubicle
4- Getting/steal a stress ball
5- Remove everything, then start from scratch
Some people put fish bowls and plants on their desks, I think its impractical for me as I don’t get as much sunlight. One thing that I don’t really fancy is putting pictures of yourself on your desk, I don’t know why but it tends to give people the wrong impression. I really need suggestions to pimp my desk….
GEMA 2007: Crazy reminisence of my college days… April 19, 2007

I received a call from Nitrus’ manager informing that a few bands will be performing in MMU on the 18th of April in conjunction with the university’s talentime competition. I was feeling kinda excited as I havent watched any bands performing live for quite a while now. So yesterday, after work, I drove all the way to Cyberjaya for the gig. The bands that were scheduled for performance was 6ixth Sense, Nitrus and Butterfingers.
I arrived quite late, as I was feeling a bit tired and hungry, I paid the cover ( RM 8 ) and slowly walked into the hall and grabbed the best seat possible, which was quite close to the stage and adjacent to a projection screen. The show had already started with lucky draws and bad stand up jokes to kill time before the actual band performances. It really reminded me of my good ol’ university days, the vibe, the girls, the adrenaline and the funky smell.
The first band, 6ixth sense went up stage after a great performance of some local college band ( great, by my definition of some band that is not professional artists…)
I have never seen them perform live before and I should say that their performance was oozing with raw energy, I really think that they’ve managed to capture the crowd. The vocalist was an Indonesian, and his accent wowed the girls, as usual.
Nitrus came up on stage and performed three songs, one of them was a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s. Verdict: Chicks dig rockstars no matter how they sound or look like.
I sneaked in backstage, meeting the rest of the bands and crew. I missed Butterfingers though, ah, I’ve seen them countless times and I still think they’re awesome.
The night ended with happy thoughts, even though I cant remember where I actually parked my car, this is worrying, as it happens to me many times and I am not on any funky substances. I finally found my car after tiring “campus excursions”, ans as soon as I know it, I was already snoring the rest of the night away…Wait, how did I know that I was snoring?
Are you a transformers fan? April 13, 2007

Transformers, the movie, is set to hit planet earth on the 4th of July this year. I got to know about the movie from an announcement trailer I saw on the net late last year. It really sent me jitters through my spine. I mean COME ON! Transformers! the movie!. Then I saw the teaser trailer last month in the cinema, I was bursting with excitement. I went to their official movie website last night and saw a couple of videos from the screenwriter (if I’m not mistaken) answering questions from fans. I soon discovered that unfortunately ‘Bumblebee’ is not featured as the yellow VW bug that we all remember and love back in the days in the movie, but a Camarro instead. O well, I downloaded the wallpapers nevertheless.
Transformers even have their own Myspace page, cool stuff. You may decide which side you’re own there.
I still can vividly remember my first Transformers action figure that I pestered my parents to buy, it was ‘Starscream’. I was 3 years old at that time in UK and after I found out that he was the bad guy a few years later, I decided to give it to my sister and bought ‘Bumblebee’ instead. I loved him so dearly, he was my friend, my “bathtub mate” and withstood a considerable amount of abuse (Once my dad’s car accidentally ran over it, but ‘Bumblebee’ was fine, just some minor “bruises” and dents here and there). It was amazing to know that those days, the first generation Transformers were made out of solid metal or die cast metal whatever.
My dream however, was to own Optimus Prime…
Honestly, Opti was a bit pricey at that time and most of my remaining childhood days were spent drooling Opti behind the local toyshop display glass. I even almost got caught trying to steal Opti once by the shopping mall’s security guard when I was 6. The thing is, I tried to carry it out of the shop, but the box was too big and heavy, My plan was to carry it slowly out of the shop without anyone noticing, but once I got to the exit, the guard stopped me and asked me to put it back on the shelf. So technically, I didn’t steal it, it was just an attempt went awry.
Fast forward 20 years. I still didn’t get to buy Opti because those cheapo plastic Taiwan parts turned me off. I still didn’t grew out of it, I collected Gundam and other robots, but the first generation Opti will still be in my heart…
I cant wait for the movie…
Autobots, Roll out!!!
Pesta Air Langkawi 2007: My scariest DJ gig ever! April 11, 2007

OK, so I haven’t blog for a few days now and I consider that as a sin. I was away for a couple of days, committing to a show that I had to perform alongside some other friends in Langkawi. The event was in conjunction with the launch of Pesta Air langkawi 2007 or The Annual Langkawi Water fest 2007. It was a hectic week, but I managed to pull through. Last week started by a foolish mistake that I made by buying an extra airfare for a friend that didn’t confirm to go, Lo and behold! Murphy’s law bit my behind and I had to bear the extra cost, O well…
Langkawi is an island off the northern coast of Malaysia, its a beautiful island famous for it’s duty free cigarettes and cheap liquor. Anything goes if you know where to find the right spots. I arrived at around noon, checked in a 4 storey motel with no lifts and my room was on the fourth floor. How cool is that?! I chucked my bags and headed straight to the beaches. The sun was right, the water was green and my head was spinning due to excitement. Fast forward: had dinner with my friends and went ape shit at the bar.
The next morning came with a sore back as if I was hit by a drunk Dugong. I took a quick shower and went straight for the sound check. The sound blaring from the speakers gave me hope. I felt a tear down my right cheek.
The night was crazy, imagine 40,000 people in front of you, staring straight at you and just waiting for something to go wrong. I can almost hear them crushing beer cans ready to strike me if I screw up. There were a few technical hiccups here and there ( At one time, the speakers went silent, I thought I was going to be killed by the locals…), but it was a great experience. I caught the morning flight and before you know it, I was already back in the office, facing my crusty desk…*sigh*
Enjoy the pix!

EMI’s DRM drop: An illusion April 4, 2007

So…EMI has finally decided to drop DRM. Should be good news eh? After much thought, I decided not to be too excited over this move. Since tunes will be 30 cents more, in return for “higher music quality” to the consumers, an illusion that Steve Apple thinks that this is a win-win deal. Truthfully speaking, I don’t think that we can actually tell the difference of the music quality, not to mention that this means more bandwith is needed to download the files (Broadband penetration in Malaysia for example is only 2%). Brilliant. The question is, is this move really beneficial to the Asian music industry? My take on this is that since it is already priced at RM5 for full track downloads, a further hike in the prices wouldn’t be very good news to the Asian music consumers. The issue now is not just dropping DRM, but I’m proposing suitable Asian prices as well. Ultimately, am I saying that EMI’s latest move is useless? I dont think so, but if we can carefully analyze the situation, not only we are back to square one, but damaging to the Asian music industry. *sigh*
Here are the key factors to be taken into consideration if we were to promote music consumerism in Asia (not limited to) :
1- Dropping DRM
2- Lowering the prices to suit Asian pricing models Vs Income per capita
3- Lowering revenue shares in mobile downloads to 55% (Currently, it is at 62%!)

I read this good news from gerd’s latest blog entry a couple of seconds ago and to tell you the truth, I’m delighted to read about this, but there is a catch, the DRM free music will cost 30 cents more than the 99 cents that they are accustomed to. EMI also claims that the newly priced files will be better in terms of aural quality. Steve Jobs sees this as a win win situation: the record labels gets a bit more money, and consumers get more convenience and better quality.
EMI CEO Eric Nicoli believes that by improving the product, he will persuade more music fans not to steal. At a press conference in London he said, “The best way to combat illegal traffic is to make legal content available at decent value, and conveniently.”
The other major labels however, are sitting back and watching the effects of this move, and according to Analyst James McQuivey, of Forrester Research, He says, “Six months from now, there will be proof as to whether this was the right idea or not.”
